The following information was provided by Masaya Maeda of the Anacostia Watershed Society.
AWS has decided to conduct a SCA (Stream Corridor Assessment) survey on the Northwest Branch and has already conducted it on a small portion of the stream. We would like to identify environmental problems such as eroding stream banks, inadequate stream buffers, exposed pipes, altered stream channels, fish migration barriers, pipe outfalls, in-stream construction sites and trash dumping locations along the branch. The major findings will be reported appropriately. The data will be also used to raise people's awareness of stream problems and eventually it will be incorporated into WRAS project by State Government.
This pipe looks like a stormwater pipe outfall but is actually the mouth of a tributary to the NW Branch.
No fish can go upstream from here to the tributary which continues at the other end of this pipe.
This shows how insensitive we are in altering our streams.
Appoximate length: 950 ft - Approximate height: 4 ft
Most portions have minor erosion.
| But there are relatively severe erosion sites. | |

This picture was taken from the inside of a corrugated metal culvert (A.K.A Pipe Arch) looking upstream.
On the upstream site of the culvert, there is a concrete slope on the streambed, which is a fish barrier.
Probably, it was installed to keep the streambed height level so as not to be scoured by increased peak streamflow.
However, it is not fish friendly and not aesthetic.
