The weather definitely smiled on the Anacostia River watershed Earth Day cleanups on April 21! A total of 62 NNWB volunteers filled 105 bags with trash and hauled out an additional 130 pounds of bulk items at four sites along the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia.
Just two tires were found this time, a distinct decline. The site in Prince Georges County reported many many plastic bags, while the sites in Montgomery County reported more cans and bottles than bags. Perhaps Montgomery County's bag fee is cutting into plastic bag pollution in Montgomery? At Burnt Mills, volunteers found another lawnmower! Since last year's haul at Burnt Mills also included a lawnmower, could it be that two residents there have replaced their entire lawn with conservation landscaping and have no further need for lawnmowers? An interesting thought. At the logjam just south of Old Randolph Rd., bottles and balls predominated, while just a little farther upstream, it was rusted car parts, hub caps, bottles, and candy wrappers. This site also reported a 20-ft pole with a Bell Atlantic switch box attached and buried items that defied extraction, such as a ceramic toilet and more car parts.
Click on the link below for reports from the sites, north to south. Unfortunately there were no pictures from the Randolph Road/Kemp Mill site.
