W. Hyattsville Metro/Northwest Branch Site
Earth Day on Northwest Branch Cleanup
April 2011

The stretch of the Northwest Branch near the W. Hyattsville Metro Station is frequently the target of cleanups; yet there is always trash. This time, leader James Graham teamed up with students from DeMatha Catholic High School and their youth leader. They gathered litter from along the Northwest Branch from the Metro crossing up to the next pedestrian bridge over the Northwest Branch. Twenty-five volunteers filled 35 bags and hauled up 150 pounds of bulk junk including a room-size carpet and two bikes. Bystanders included geese. Said one student, "I've never seen a goose hiss before. This is the most interesting day in my life!"

Thank you, DeMatha High!

This is the trash that got away. The team would have needed long poles or a ladder, so plastic bags such as these just stay festooning the trees until they break into tiny pieces and fall into the water or blow somewhere else.
