Early Earth Day on the Northwest Branch
|
|
Under a cloudy but rainless sky, this year 90 volunteers hauled 173 bags of trash from six sites along the Northwest Branch, the most we've ever tackled on one day. But bags don't tell the whole story. Trashed items included bikes, tires, chairs, a lawnmower, a nice framed picture, a wallet with a birth certificate, mirrors, grocery carts, TVs, a tent, piping, carpet, pellet guns, and the usual odd car parts. Our cleanups were part of the concerted effort by the Anacostia Watershed Society and the Alice Ferguson Foundation to clean the streams in the entire Metro area. Quite a day! Many thanks to everyone--pictured and not pictured--who helped clean up our Northwest Branch! And special thanks to helpers at our sixth site, the Lamberton Tributary, who just didn't record their labors with pictures. NNWB hosts these "Clean the Stream" activities every spring and fall at various sites along the Northwest Branch. Please check the NNWB website in the fall for the time and sites of our next cleanups. Want to see yourself and your friends and neighbors hard at work?
